A vicidial server comes with a built-in firewall. It is by default set to blacklist mode, which is not a viable long-term solution. Changing to whitelist, however, resolves the hacking issue completely unless you employ a hacker or just decide to allow an IP in that supports a hacker you don't employ.
PoundTeam Incorporated published (free) a whitelist firewall for Vicidial over a decade ago when the first hacks became problematic. Since that time, most other Vicidial colocation/hosting/leasing facilities have adopted whitelist only as well. To date, PoundTeam's clients have not experienced a breach unless the breach was specifically from an IP authorized by the client (ie: inside job, employed a hacker, or "allowed a hacker in" as a consultant).
If you purchase a server from PoundTeam and leave it in our colo: The cost is $200/mo for the colocation per server. If you send us a (standard rack-mount) server: Same cost (but you are responsible for parts/labor for any repairs).
The Vicidial Group also hosts (Vicihost.com) and AFAIK has never been hacked. Last I knew they also sold machines: You could always purchase a server and self-host as long as your bandwidth is adequate.
