They why do you want to update if you don't what it to change anything? 
Maybe you mean "how can I do a update without loosing all leads and other data?"
Step one: Do a backup!
Step two: verify that the data in backup is OK, this can be done by restoring the data to a test-server (virtual or not)
Step three: store the backup on a secure media
