I've read on the forum before that vicidial in really any form is not viable with software raid. Is this true? Why is this the case? Any help is appreciated.

it is entirely viable. but ONLY if you have a very very light load on your server. any heavy load on a vicidial server will cause too much activity for the software raid, the entire system will overload and crash horribly. But if you have a Powerful server and don't use it for more than 25-50 calls you should be fine.

Vicidial works fine on a software RAID, although you should never use a RAID5 software or hardware with a vicidial dialer.

what about RAID-6? or any other RAID level which uses parity?

I'm sure it will function, but for software RAIDs we only recommend RAID1 or RAID10. Those are the only software RAID levels we ever use, for anything else we use a hardware RAID controller(LSI MegaRAID almost exclusively). RAID6 should ONLY be used for archive server purposes, not for anything else.

Since this thread is a few years old - I would like to know if Matt (or anyone) has any updated hardware RAID recommendation? That work with the current O/S (OpenSuSE Leap v.42.3 64-bit). I have a SuperMicro motherboard, it says that their embedded Intel RAID works with 42.2 - and then only with the footnote of "i-SATA/SATA (w/o RAID, AHCI mode)".
You had previously stated that you almost exclusively used the LSI MegaRAID controller -but - there appears to be a pretty large number of models out there. If you can give me some guidelines to help me narrow it down - I would REALLY appreciate it. Also - we are looking to do this primarily for fault-tolerance - however, performance is always a good thing too...so any configuration recommendations will also be appreciated (RAID1, 10, 5, etc)...THANKS!
David

We still only recommend MegaRAID hardware RAIDs for high-volume VICIdial databases. Any MegaRAID card is better than any non-MegaRAID card. The best MegaRAID cards have a cache and a battery.
We still only recommend RAID 1 or 10 for most VICIdial use. We only recommend RAID-6 for archive server functions.
