I know this topic has come up many times and I'm quite knowledgeable about VoIP codecs, the question I have is this. I know the meetme application converts everything to slinear, wouldn't it make sense to run all the calls between multiple servers over IAX channels in slinear as well? Isn't there some processor hit using ulaw?

There is pretty much no processor hit for running Ulaw or alaw.

i always thought ulaw and alaw were just transports for slinear (i mean, it has to be packaged for transport over network, right?). i thought they were just "add header and send" break up and encapsulate methods.

That's good to know about meetme. Apparently we are doubling the size of our floor over the next 6 months and nobody thought to tell me when I was calculating the bandwidth we needed for our fiber connection, so I am looking at g729 so that I can make do with our current. I was going to force g729 on the phone end so that the asterisk system could just do passthrough to our trunk, but if meetme has to do conversion then that would just make things worse. Damn.

It will just double the hit on your processor if you are going to use g729 on your phones as well.
Thats asterisk will have to transcode it too.
