I am just curious. This is not something we can easily change but I have an insatiable curiousity about this and want to know why we use only 1 table to store all the leads compared to different tables for each list(similar to the custom fields.) Is there a performance gain or is it something that was inherited from when VICIDIAL was initially conceived?

Keeping leads all in one table greatly simplifies many queries and processes in hundreds of places within the system. It also make moving leads from list to list a lot easier. Those are the main two reasons, but there are many others as well.
