compile Linux kernel 2.6.17 in redhat 9

I am using redhat 9 for installing asterisk.I have some problem while i am compiling linux kernel .

Hi
RH9 is too old now ? is there any reason only RH9
why dont you go to FC5 , its automatically install most of the
packages, just select customise, and select everything should do the job
and its easy to compile the kernel and fast.
