check the output when running
/etc/init.d/vicidial restart
but since you have scratch install your setup might differ from what I'm used to, so in system-wide language:
start the asterisk-service like a normal boot would and look at the response, or does it even try to start the service at boot?

You have a scratch install and have not listed your install instructions or a link to them. Since the issue you have is an installation issue ... and we have no information about your installation ... well, you get the idea. :)

Also worthy of note: you pinged your own post which removed you from the "unanswered" list I usually check. In essence, the system believed you answered yourself and removed you from the list of "those needing answers". Probably did not have the desired result. :)

If you install a Vicibox server in a Virtual machine, you may be able to extract the proper new startup routine and mimic it in Ubuntu. :)
