Network stage of Vicibox V6 Install

Postby sf_andy » Thu Jul 03, 2014 5:54 am

Hi,

Trying to install Vicibox V6 - we've got as far as the network config. Entered all info, no problems with our network, but ping is resulting in "network is unreachable" - is there something missing from the installation notes or could someone please advise, or is there something I misunderstanding.

Thanks

It would seem your network setup is incomplete or configured wrong. You need to provide more information.

Hi ,

I am also experiencing the same problem.

When i try to ping google to test connectivity it gives me 'network unreachable'.
i built this server from scratch and its connected directly to d link modem, i am unsure on what to fill in the name server 1 till 3? and would the default IPv4 gateway be the local IP address of the modem or will it be the internal WAN IP? also would i need to configure DHCP in yast? when i try to it gives me the error 'cannot determine host name'.
this is my first time configuring vicibox,so any help will be appreciate..

The host name error shouldn't be a huge issue. It just means that you have to get to the box via it's IP. Might be some other negative side effects, but I haven't seen them.

I have been down this road with a few installs and here is what I do to diagnose it. The first thing I always do is put it into dhcp mode and see if it gets settings. I then go through the following steps. This assumes you are on a LAN behind a router if you are connecting with-out a router skip to step 2. In YAST you need to configure the manual IP, gateway, and DNS. If you need help with this just google, "YAST network configuration" and you should find PLENTY of help. If not post back and I can try to put up pictures and what not. Below are three steps I use to try to find out what is wrong.

1. Ping [network router IP] ( an example on one of my networks is 192.168.1.254)
->FAIL - You aren't on the network check that you have configuration right and the right drivers
----SIDE NOTE----> On some systems I have found that after fighting to get things installed I had to re-install the drivers for the network card to get things to work. It happened because I had an uncommon network card and opensuse didn't have the drivers installed so I had to put them on a USB and compile them myself.
-> RESPONSE - You are on your local LAN move to step 2

2. Ping 8.8.8.8
->FAIL - You can't get to the internet you must have something configured wrong even though you are on the LAN or can ping your host. This is a good time to get another system put in all the settings and make sure it isn't your provider. I usually just take the setting put it into my mac then see if I can get my browser to google.com. If you can you know it is a configuration problem in the server. If you can't you need to check the settings and potentially contact your ISP.
-> RESPONSE! - you can get to the internet go to step 3!

3. Ping google.com
-> FAIL - If you did step 1 & 2 you are most likely dealing with a DNS issues. I like to set mine to 8.8.8.8 which is google's and then I set it to the DNS for my ISP as well so I have a redundancy
-> RESPONSE! - Seems like everything works just fine.....

When you say "connected directly to the D-Link modem" ... is that modem the same one your laptop and other desktops are connected to? If so, it is likely providing DHCP as it creates a private network and your network settings on the Vicibox server should autoconfigure (or can be set to DHCP for the purpose of the buildout).

The local IP of the D-Link router should be both your "gateway" and your "DNS" (which DHCP should detect and autoconfigure for you).

What do you get from:
Code: Select all
ifconfig
ip route show
