GSM format to MP3

Hi,
Is it possible to convert GSM recording format to MP3 format?
Or it has to be WAV then to MP3 format.

I believe it is possible, but SoX might have to convert to RAW internally before it gets to MP3 which might lower the recording quality.

It would be better to just go from ULAW to MP3 if that is how you want the audio formatted in the end.

The AST_CRON_mix_recordings_MP3.pl script does this if you have lame installed.
