Virtual servers .. ok run :)

Postby Nortelguy » Wed Dec 17, 2008 1:43 pm

Alright, I am getting a supermicro server to run two dialers from. Its going to be a bear of a box tons of b**** IE Quad processor, tons of RAM & fast FSB.. I am going to run it with vmware since good ole MSFT server 2008 isn't to unix/linux friendly. I know its probably not best practice, or recommeded I do this however why not try. How many people out there have tried it and what kind of mixed results are you seeing. What type of hardware setups are you guys using that it actually works with ? TIA :)

Virtual servers work OK with very few agents, none of the virtual servers we have tried work very well under any kind of load. Money and time are better spent with more separate servers.

not necessarily errors, more like poor allocation of resources so that the audio sounds bad or calls take a long time to transfer.

fwiw, I run the mysql/apache from a virtual machine, but I run asterisk itself on its own machine.

This system relies on "Hi Res" timing (1000 tics per second) and expects all the tics to be available. It may not use them all, but it seems that if any are missing (virtual?), the system will misfire slightly and sound quality and performance are dramatically reduced.

This is my best summary of the situation, based entirely on "observational guessing".

The timer is just one part of the problems, even on systems where you lock one CPU core down to a virtual process(4 virtual servers for a quad core processor for example) there are still issues with resource allocation and poor capacity and audio quality.
