accessing the asterisk CLI

I am trying to setup a new carrier on vicibox and as suggested in the managers manual i am trying to logon to the asterisk CLI

to do this i am logging in using the "root" user and typeing asterisk -r however i get the message: "the program 'asterisk' is currently not installed"

any ideas? very confused!
