64bit OS for vicibox

Hi, newbie here!

I would like to ask for your opinion on what 64bit OS to install for my DB Server where vicibox servers will be pointing into it. My bet is CentOS but I'm not sure if you have good and bad experiences when dealing with different OS.

We recommend OpenSuSE, they have a 64-bit ISO installer. We have installed many OpenSuSE 64bit DB servers for our larger clients and we strongly recommend OpenSuSE over CentOS.

it is with vicidial installer or without ?

We just use the ISO from here if we are installing a database-only server.

Then we usually download the latest 5.0.X MySQL binary directly from MySQL:

Thanks a lot for the recommendation, I'll go for OpenSuse 64bit. Do I need to install 64bit MySQL too?

Any suggestion on how to partition or RAID my HDD? I have 16 X 180GB (HDD) and i want a fresh install on that server. We need to upgrade it from 32bit to 64bit OS.

How much RAM do you have in this server?

What kind of RAID card do you have?

What kind of hard drives are these?

It has 16gig RAM, SAS drive and an adaptec RAID card. Any suggestion on how to partition this server and what RAID best to use in this setup?

You could use the 64-bit version of MySQL, and for your RAID, you should set up a RAID 10 (do NOT use RAID5, 3 or 6 for a database server, it is a very bad idea)

Can i install Mysql 64 bit for my server having like 4-6-8 GB of RAM only for a separate Web/Apache Server..?

-somehow making apache 64 bit also..? Does installing like a 64 bit distro for opensuse or ubuntu server its packages are not 64..?

- if installing 64 bit you do install it on binaries right..? not on package.

Do i need to use the default partition of the OpenSuse or do you have great ideas on how to partition it, any suggestions?

There is really no advantage to using 64bit MySQL on a system with only 4GB of RAM, in fact it will REDUCE your capacity.

You do not need 64bit apache.
