Installation problem....

Postby B.lee2 » Sat Dec 31, 2011 1:44 pm

Ok, I have a problem:

I just found these old P4s for a Pita (25 $):
IBM ThinkCentre M50 8187, 2.8 ghz, 512mb ram

So I take the newb/easy way out and use Linux USB creator to create a bootable USB.When trying to boot up from a USB key, I am encountering a strange problem:

"Cannot find kickstart file on CDROM"

I'm not too sure what to do from here. Some preliminary research on the internet suggests an issue with the drivers.

If I just click on cancel

After that, it asks me:
"Select the file which is your driver disk image"...

I'm still gonna do research, but if somebody has an easy answer to that one, it would be much appreciated.

I honestly have no clue what the motherboard is, as there's no operating system on the P4. I didn't try to install it from a CD because all I could find were 700 mb CDs and Goautodial iso is larger then this...by 11 mb.

CD is CD. there are none that are 11M too small.

learn how to burn an iso (it's not the same thing as copying the content onto the cd, it is "mastering" the cd by placing the image which is the iso on the entire CD).

after you have burned the iso, you'll be able to boot from it if your system is set to boot from the CD drive.

Aight... ok. I didn't know about that.

This is weird though, the install ,after 3 hours decides to hang at 97% on the XUL runtime for Gecko applications at 4:44 minutes... I guess it might just be because the P4 is so old , but is that normal that it takes several hours like that? I installed Lubuntu on the other P4, and it took much less time than this.

I think I'm just gonna leave it for the night and see how it goes in 2012. Thanks y'all, happy new year.

EDIT: ok, it looks normal, it isn't frozen it is just extremly slow.

Argh, I can't believe after an install of more than 10 hours, it does "No operating system found, press F1 to reboot. All this suspense for nothing.

Will try out the vicibox.

EDIT: Ok, thank the heavens, I just forgot to change the startup sequence and it is booting up fine.
