no I didnt try to change it to same. And there are no funcky characters. Tried changing it to bob and didnt work. Check mysql
select * from vicidial_users where user = 'admin';
and it showed me the password is changed to bob, but when I try to login, it doesnt let me in
thanks

is this a fresh install from goautodial 2.0? or an upgrade?

i would reinstall. (first i might dig into the code on the admin page and do a little troubleshooting to see why the php/mysql handshake is not working ... but with this kind of a weird problem, i'd always be nervous that there was something ELSE weird going on that would catch up to me later ... and reinstallation is less trouble NOW than after the system is "online" making money).
you may consider vicibox redux 3.0.6 if goautodial continues to annoy you for some reason.

Hmm... and what browser are you using? Have you tried it on firefox? I'm using firefox 3.6.11 and it works fine. Consider using it or try clearing your browser's history/cache.

Also tried it on google chrome browser and it works fine. Looks like you need to clear your browser's history.

of course it's always possible that you're just doing something wrong or have a huge misunderstanding somewhere.
have you tried to continue using the old password after you change it to the new password (in case you're changing it in the wrong place and didn't actually change it)
what is your URL when you change your password?
