I have installed GoAutoDial 2.1 and want to install the g729 codec. I have located the codec at asterisk.hosting.lv/ but am not sure what instructions / code to type to get it downloaded and installed on my server once i have logged in as root on the server.

After downloading the right codec for your computer.
You can use an sftp client like WINSCP(it's free)
use your root and password loging.
then put the codec in :usr/lib/asterisk/modules
then copy the full name of your codec.and using SSH CLIENT.

TYPE/asterisk -r then load and past the full name of your codec you copied before.

You should see a message that your codec was installed

As william always says:

when you post, please post your entire configuration including (but not limited to) your installation method and vicidial version with build.

this IS a requirement for posting along with reading the stickies (at the top of each forum) and the manager's manual (available on EFLO.net, both free and paid versions)

You should also post: Asterisk version, telephony hardware (model number is helpful here), cluster information if you have one, and whether any other software is installed in the box. If your installation method is "from scratch" you must post your operating system and should also post the .iso version from which you installed your original operating system.

Similar to This:
Vicibox X.X from .iso | Vicidial X.X.X-XXX Build XXXXXX-XXXX | Asterisk X.X.X | Single Server | No Digium/Sangoma Hardware | No Extra Software After Installation

the best way to maintain good calling quality is to just disallow all and allow g711, alaw, ulaw, on the user's end and on the trunk end disallow all and allow only g729 by this you can get best result also you have maintain physical memory by this command echo 3> /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches this command cleans up physical memory for other processes.

the default codec is ulaw. the more preferred codec is ulaw. the best codec is ulaw.

the only reason to use g729 is if you have low bandwidth availabilty. g729 uses a great deal more cpu and had lower voice quality (noticeably) than ulaw. however: g729 is superior to gsm if you must compress the call. gsm is free, g729 is not free (although honestly I've never heard of anyone ever being hunted for g729 abuse ... has anyone ever heard of this happening?).

seriously: If you are not low in bandwidth, just use ulaw.

i'd also like to hear of someone using wideband sound codecs. still have not had anyone use that and report back :)
