Hi,

I am getting a kernel oops installing vicidialnow 1.2.

I am using a Intel Core2Duo E7400, ASUS P5KPL-AM SE, 2gb RAM, SATA HDD and DVD.

I will appreciaty if someone could point me in the right direction.

as i know many motherboard is not supported but centos and his kernel .
try to reset your bios as the default config or try to change your computer just to know if the setup success or no

I solved the problem. The Asus P5KPL-AM motherboard has a Realtek 8102 EL 10/100 NIC. The CentOS incorrectly tries to load the R8169 module, which is intended for a Gigabit ethernet NIC, crashing at boottime. I disable the module adding blacklist r8169 to /etc/modprobe.conf. It prevents the crash but also disables the NIC.
I downloaded kmod-r8101-1.013.00_NAPI-2.el5.elrepo.i686.rpm from elrepo, installed it using a pendrive and everything works fine.

good solution as i say centos is not good and not stable with vicidial avoid it !!
and for device network the best one is gigabyte

What's the difference between CentOS and Debian or other Linux distributions? What's your basis of not good and stable?

We've been running Vicidial on CentOS (and VicidialNOW) on many centers for more than 2 years. It's as stable as stable gets.

We've been over the CentOS pitfalls MANY times here. CentOS was designed as a desktop OS, not a server OS. Here's a little summary of problems with Centos:

As for RedHat family(CentOS/Fedora/RedHat) Yes VicidialNow is based on CentOS but the developers of VicidialNow have made many changes to the stock release including recompiling the kernel to make it function better so it is not just a stock CentOS install. I recommend not using Redhat-family OSs because of the kernel issues, the custom utilities, the issues with default process prioritization and the poor history of maintaining things like the Perl package(one serious incident as recent as 3 months ago). The other distros do not have these issues, and the fact that VICIDIAL usually pushes servers and the OS harder than most other applications means that you will see these faults that would normally not affect your system under other applications.

We have a lot of experience troubleshooting high-volume VICIDIAL systems all over the world and many problems on these systems are solved by wiping the servers and loading something other than Red-hat-family Linux on them.

Here we go again with the Linux distro debate. Hehehe! The way I see it, it's all a matter of choice. I prefer CentOS and Gentoo, Matt prefers Slakware and Ubuntu and so on and so forth. It's all a matter of tweaking the OS and getting the optimum performance.

I disagree that CentOS was designed as a desktop OS. RedHat was never intended nor marketed for the desktop. They always push their system for the server market. The only issue here is that the default kernel has it's pre-emption set to desktop. Whereas Ubuntu is set as server. Now why is ubuntu being marketed mostly for the desktop when it's pre-emption is set for server?

I'm not sure about the Perl package incident? Any links for this one?

For most guys, it's easier to wipe out the system and do a clean install. This is specially true if you're not that familiar with the Linux distribution. Heck. I usually wipe clean any other distros aside from CentOS/VicidialNOW, Gentoo and Debian.

As for the Perl issues, the redhat family has actually screwed up Perl on their distros no less than 6 times, in releases. A very sad track record in my opinion.

Yep! I remember that post. Hehehe! It's quite ironic for both Redhat/CentOS and Ubuntu on their kernel preemption choices. The first one (RH/CentOS) has desktop preemption while being positioned for servers. The other one (Ubuntu) has server preemption while being aggressively positioned for desktop usage.

Opensuse. Hmm.. Haven't quite used that for some years now. I've read some pretty good reviews about them.

I'd still say it's all a matter of preference on which Linux distro to use with Vicidial. It's the customization for optimum performance and stability that set's the difference.

i have just say that centos it's not good with vicidial me too i have try it before with vicidialnow and also with scratch install we will find many probleme in compiling zaptel and timig voice .
but if we forget vicidial and we speak about the difference about debian family and redhat family they are no diffrence ;redhat want to kill the use of linux with the harden use of his and debian is more beautfull and more stable is his kernel and more answered in the net and you can seach google for this
it will answer you more good than me .
with my experience with vicidial i have found the configuration of asterisk+apache+vicidial+other module more confortable in this OS "ubuntu;debian;opensure,slackware,gentoo"
but centos=zero
i will give you a exemple:
try to make multiserver with centos version+adding a voicetimer device and try to work more than 25 seats for one weak non stop and say me the result after i wait your answer

i love CentOS (Trixbox got me into this mess, after all). BUT unless you go with VicidialNOW, CentOS is a hard thing to master for vicidial. Luckily, VicidialNOW *IS* available. I do have a question, though: Is VicidialNOW still going to be here into the foreseeable future? Will it continue to evolve with Vicidial (and Vicibox)?

Of course, it really doesn't matter, as the DATA can be ported across the systems, which is marvelous. But it's a shame for someone to learn the CentOS Methods, and then have to re-learn two years from now if it doesn't "keep up".

How about it? Is VicidialNOW going to continue to "keep up"? (and I am *NOT* suggesting that it isn't! I'm just asking!)

(PS: I will insist that credit is given where due, however, as the VicidialNOW install was excellent and BEFORE Vicibox.)

Yep! The VicidialNOW project will continue and keep up with Vicidial releases. CentOS would still be the base distro.

It's starting to become a truly community project as more contributors are joining the team.
