Vicibox 8_1_2 and the kernel, and sandbox?

Postby bghayad » Tue Jul 02, 2019 8:43 am

Hello;

I need to install Vicibox of version 8_1_2 on a new hardware which is Dell Optiplex 7060, the OpenSuSe that is coming with Vicibox 8_1_2 has a kernel version 4.4.155-68-default and that caused a problem that is not able to see the network card. I checked with OpenSuSe forum and I have to upgrade the kernel to 4.4.180-102-default, if I installed this kernel, and then installed the vicibox, will it be any problem in the future?

From the other side: I see the sandbox directory which contains ViciBox_v9.x86_64-9.0.0.install.iso, can I use it? For what this sandbox (is it newer version of vicibox of it has special usage)? Because I see the size of its iso file is 50% of the size of the 8_1_2 iso file.

Regards & Thanks a lot.

Install the OS with the Vicibox .iso installer, but do not install vicibox just yet, then upgrade the kernel, then continue with the Vicibox install.

You'll likely need to use a different network card (USB?) OR install on a Hard Drive in a different box and move the HD to this box with the funky network card after the kernel upgrade.

Thank you a lot.

And what about sandbox directory that contains ViciBox_v9.x86_64-9.0.0.install.iso? Is it newer version or it has another usage?

just an OS quick test to see how well it works on various hardware. it WOULD be useful (to the project) if you were to try it and post your results along with the specific hardware (including the specs on the network card and version of the motherboard, etc). It will become the next generation of Vicibox, eventually. If you can provide the identification of a missing drive that could easily be included for a major hardware manufacturer's product to work, Kumba would not complain a bit. I can't say he'd include it, but your odds are good if we're talking about a major brand.

Plus, of course, he'd like to know how well the OS install runs on specific hardware (with or without RAID, SSD, and any other variants out there).

There is a post on the vicibox server install and demo board on the topic, awaiting more comments.
