Firewall & NIC setup

Postby vkjalan » Sat Feb 11, 2012 10:05 am

Hi,
I have an Instance, My Internet provider has given me only one WAN IP.
My router keeps crashing for no reason and also acts weird at times by cutting down the speed and stuff replaced it 8 times till now. Now i thing the best option is to eliminate the router.
I was wondering if I could directly connect the modem to the Vicibox server and configure it there then the speed and other issues would be fine. But also I need the internet to be shared among a few machines as they need to access internet for data.

Now I know this is not safe as all the data would be passing through the Vicibox but well I think this is the only solution. ( any precautionary measures ? )

I need the exact steps to be followed to install the NIC Cards and also the commands to allow the internet being shared between the computers. I dont know a lot about Linux so I need the steps exactly to be followed.

Thank you in Advance waiting for the updates eagerly.

Planning of Installing Vicibox 3.1.5 fresh install on a standard server with Voip no other software installed.

You are delving into an area completely outside of Vicidial. We have actually had a couple clients who insisted on doing this (using the Vicidial server as a router), but we do not recommend it. I CAN say that you'll first need to verify that this will, in some way, be beneficial.

I'll explain this: Before you actually set up your Vicidial server as a "Router" for everyone else in the office, try verifying that your Vicidial system will operate in a stable fashion with THIS internet connection. Obviously if that actually works, you have a reason to invest the time/money into using Vicidial as a router or something else. IF, however, Vicidial (I recommend Vicibox 3.1.14 presently) does not react well to this internet connection, the problem is likely the connection and NOTHING you do, and no amount of money, can fix a crappy internet connection. Seriously.

To be clear, the reason I make this suggestion is in part because you said "replaced it 8 times till now". It sounds like you said you have used Eight different routers and they have all been unable to hold a stable connection. This does not sound like a "Good" internet connection to me. So before you go nuts and figure out how to accomplish this thing you have no idea how to do (and will not likely get a quick answer on this site, as this is NOT a "router" site), at least make sure it's worth the effort.

And as for safety, there is no real danger to having all your data pass through the Vicidial server, but it will be a waste of resources and will reduce the capacity of your system (possibly dramatically).

You may also find that the problem is within your network (many shops simply DO NOT allow their agents internet access at all ... period ... nada ... zip, and this fixes many networking problems instantly). Often it turns out to be best to get a "cheap" internet connection for the agents, and reserve the "good one" for Vicidial.

Oh: and before I forget:

when you post, please post your entire configuration including (but not limited to) your installation method and vicidial version with build.

this IS a requirement for posting along with reading the stickies (at the top of each forum) and the manager's manual (available on EFLO.net, both free and paid versions)

You should also post: Asterisk version, telephony hardware (model number is helpful here), cluster information if you have one, and whether any other software is installed in the box. If your installation method is "from scratch" you must post your operating system and should also post the .iso version from which you installed your original operating system.

If this is a "Cloud" or "Virtual" server, please note the technology involved along with the version of that techology (ie: VMware Server Version 2.0.2). If it is not, merely stating the Motherboard model # and CPU would be helpful.

Similar to This:

Vicibox X.X from .iso | Vicidial X.X.X-XXX Build XXXXXX-XXXX | Asterisk X.X.X | Single Server | No Digium/Sangoma Hardware | No Extra Software After Installation | Intel DG35EC | Core2Quad Q6600
