Anyone interested in a SIMPLE master password reset (in case of emergencies?) which requires ONLY physical access to the server with keyboard and mouse ... and a couple minutes? (no cd, just a few keystrokes ...).

Or would posting this be a bad thing? LOL

Which password are you referring to exactly?

Oh, sorry, the root user password, since that can be used to regain access to the system and thereby ANY other password.

I am assuming that whatever method this is is already public knowledge and not a zero-day exploit, in which case I cannot see the harm in posting it.

Got it from the web myself for a client who locked himself out, but there was NO CD Drive LOL

That's why you install Linux on a USB key for use as a rescue disk. Just google "Live USB" and you should get all kinds of returns. Same theory as a Live CD, but on a USB key instead. And in my opinion, 10-times more handy and useful!

I would create an extra small partition and format it as fat32, so you can also use the key as a go-between from linux to windows, etc.

Yep. But try to transmit the "usb key" to a client in (state omitted) who's completely panicked because he's lost his master password and thinks an ex-manager is going to do something BAD.

A few keystrokes, no cd, no usb, nothing to install, worked very nicely on your vicibox rescue boot (actually turned it into a rescue boot!!!).
