Raspberry Pi - Display Real-Time Main Report

Postby adam.greenhalgh1 » Wed Jun 05, 2013 3:54 am

Hi All,

I am looking into setting up a monitor within our building to use as a display for our real-time main report.

With this in mind we are looking into mounting the monitor - and obviously don't want wires hanging about or a tower computer making it look untidy.

Basing it on basic spec would the 512MB Raspberry Pi Android computer be able to handle the display of the real time main report? Refreshing on a 4 second basis.

This monitor will be on for around 16-18 hours of the day.

Any help on this would be useful.

Many thanks

Adam.

Best thing to do is try it out and let us know how it goes. :) I'd love to get my hands on a Raspberry Pi and play with it.

I might just have to do :) Might just have to do it as a side project and then introduce them to it. They want to display the real-time main report - but not really leaned on me as to push it forward. But I've got a couple of 40" monitors at home that I'm not really using. So may try with that first. see how it goes - and if it can handle a playing a few games I'm sure it will be able to handle refreshing the real-time main report :)

Plus Raspberry Pi is an extremely cheap device :D

I'm 99% sure that it will work, the real-time report is very lightweight,
I got a raspberry, and it can handle basic browsing and it can even play youtube videos if I remember right.
but have not tried the real-time report.

you might want to use xset in cron to disable the monitor off hours to prevent burning the pixels of the monitor.

One thing regarding wires lying about and stuff, regardless of the hardware - there will be wires floating about.

We would need to log in to the network locally in order to view the report. So looking into Tablets and stuff now as they use WiFi :)

I want/would like it to be a minimalistic as possible to do such a simple job, but there is no such thing as a simple job is there! :D

I'd recommend upgrading to GOautodial CE 3.0. The dashboard looks awesome on large monitors. And it automatically resizes on smaller ones like tablets and smart phones.

I want to focus on achieving it first. I'm beginning to think I could just use the little Android dongle (mini PC) to give us the facility. They have a good spec and would be more than capable of displaying the real-time report.

We may look at upgrading sometime in the near future but for now the system we have in place is fantastic. So why fix something that doesn't need fixing :D
