g729 does not require hardware. g729 also does not get you down to 1/8 of the payload. Experience has shown it is more like 1/3 if you are lucky. 1/2 if not.
g729 "Test/Educational" can theoretically be installed for this purpose (based on some interpretations of the law, I'm not a lawyer, so check with yours!) which is available for free. It will heavily load your CPU, but may allow many more calls so you can test out the g729 concept before purchasing licenses or hardware.
There are companies that sell pure g729 hardware as well as the ability to simply purchase the g729 licenses (from digium among others). But to answer your question: As long as the DIGIUM hardware you purchase is certified for the version of asterisk you have installed ... it WILL work. Digium owns Asterisk. LOL
There is also the possibility of leasing a dialer (or hosting your existing dialer) at a colocation facility. The Vicidial Group allows leasing of their servers (as does PoundTeam), we also allow you to host your dialer at our facility. Once your dialer is at a facility like ours, you only need enough bandwidth to connect your agents to our system. After that, we have plenty of bandwidth available. In large rooms, the g729 ends up being used to allow lots of Agents to get to the Dialer (before relocation to a nice Fiber-linked facility!).
