Asterisk v1.4 vs v1.8

Vicibox v5.0.3 - regular install
Version: 2.10b0.5
SVN Version: 2167
DB Schema Version: 1385

For awhile now I have been using asterisk 1.4.44 in production without much issue.. I have a new cluster I am working on that is not yet in production. Everytime I talk to someone about asterisk and vici I keep hearing 1.8 is the way to go. However In my tests 1.8 is buggy/crashes/major fail etc.. My calling is 100% outbound with high cps and a fairly low avg customer time.

So I've loaded up another db and 14 dialers with 1 web server and this is what I see when I compare asterisk 1.4 and asterisk 1.8 running load testing at the dial rates we usually run with 4 servers.. 2 asterisk 1.4 and 2 asterisk 1.8 one with Amfeltec PCI-E timers and one without for each version...

SERVER + DESCRIPTION IP ACT LOAD CHAN DISK OUTBOUND INBOUND
vici42 Server vici42 ast 1.8 no timing XX.XX.0.139 Y 504 - 34% 1258 12% LINK LINK
vici43 Server vici43 ast 1.4 no timing XX.XX.0.140 Y 175 - 9% 56 12% LINK LINK
vici44 Server vici44 ast 1.8 w timing XX.XX.0.141 Y 475 - 28% 972 12% LINK LINK
vici45 Server vici45 ast 1.4 w Timing XX.XX.0.142 Y 32 - 8% 58 12% LINK LINK

Notice the 2 servers running asterisk 1.8 seem to have problems closing/destroying channels at high CPS.. Other than the version of asterisk each server is configure identically for balance dialing only 30 channels... Anything over that and the asterisk 1.8 machines asterisk sessions constantly die and get restarted..

I'm lost for ideas since I keep hearing from everyone that asterisk 1.8 is the way to go but in my environment is falls flat on its face. This is not in production and running the load test scripts but I have seen the same results with asterisk 1.8 on our production clusters which is why we pulled Asterisk 1.8 out of our production environment..

I see the new Vicibox v6.0 is out I may try installing on the 2 machines I am testing asterisk 1.8 on but I do not see where that would make much of a difference.

Which Asterisk 1.8 version?

We have several clients on Asterisk 1.8 and it works very well under high volume.
