Hi guys,
is it alright to set the slave to read only if your main purpose is just to lessen the load of the main database server when viewing reports?

I would say yes, definitely.
1) There still might be some reports breaking replication when attempt to write to the slave
2) Piece of mind against human errors- running write queries on the slave by mistake, instead on the master. Avoiding that lovely "ohh sh*t", followed by slave rebuilding, for the Nth time, lol.
