the xlite does not ring after i logged on to vicidial

Postby howellrepaja » Wed Feb 13, 2008 4:22 pm

hi based on the forum, i learned that we will log on first in xlite and verify it the asterisk registered it.

then after we will log on into the ip/agc/vicidial.php, and once log on the xlite will ring... but unfortunately my xlite did not ring.

can anyone tell me what problem is this?

thanks. happy valentines.

Whether you enter the phone number and password of the appropriate Xlite phone you use to login in the vicidial agent page.

And also confirm xlite is registered with asterisk

Noone in session occurs because Xlite phone is not logged in the session. It will be solved once your xlite rings you will receive something like" you are the only person in the conference".

Make sure the phone you are entering the page is same as that of Xlite. and check the registration of xlite phone in asterisk console.

There is some thing bigger going on if installing APP_CONFERNCE fixed this issue. APP_CONFERENCE is not stable and can cause your vicidial server to crash. Also because it does not rely on the zaptel timer it can actually poorer performance on a higher loaded server.

Howell,

From what I can see there are some suggestions about what to try. It would be much simpler for people to assist you in resolving this issue if you provided more information about the problem when you respond.

Can you watch the console and see what asterisk says when you login to VICI? That way you can see if there is an issue and if you cannot tell what asterisk is saying you have more information to provide people you are asking for help. Have you looked at the active dialplan from the console? Verified you have conference rooms IN ASTERISK, not just in the VICI admin menu? Vici will have the conference rooms defined and attempt to send you to them, even if asterisk has no conference room to do this with. Is asterisk running, as you could get the same issue if asterisk is configured but not started.

. This problem could have its root in many area's and without some footwork from you to verify things in asterisk like your conferences exist. You have created extensions for your xlite phones AS WELL as sip definitions (extensions.conf and sip.conf). You could have your phone register with sip.conf entries, but if you do not configure the individual sip extension inside extensions.conf saying how to dial the phone, it will never ring even though it registers the phone with the server.

These are just a few of the issues you could be having. Again please check your dialplan (show dialplan) and see if you have the SIP extension loaded properly. Can you dial this extension from another xlite phone and have a 2 way conversation? These are all basic testing things you should verify work before even bothering to sign into the VICI client.

Sometimes, it can be an audio codec issue.

If the phone isn't set to use an enabled audio codec, the phone will not ring.

First off do not use CentOS and do not use asterisk 1.4.

This is not your current problem but they will become ones in the future, This is generally a problem with a missed step in the installation document. Can you please post the output of "screen -ls" run on the Linux command prompt.

There are screens on:
12497..asterisk-test (Dead ???)
2736.ASTVDadapt (Detached)
11604..asterisk-test (Dead ???)
14263.ASTVDauto (Detached)
14257.ASTsend (Detached)
Remove dead screens with 'screen -wipe'.

There are several issues with the default CentOS kernel in relation to process prioritization and process optimization that we have run into problems with at client sites. there are also other issues with the custom utilities and settings that CentOS uses. We are putting together a more detailed list on this actually.

As for it's use in vicidialNOW, that was not developed by the VICIDIAL Group. It was created by a talented group of VICIDIAL consultants in the Philippines and has been a great way to get people exposed to VICIDIAL. However we would not recommend using it in large production call centers. I have a client with both a Slackware server and a vicidialNOW server(as a backup) and they have had issues with the VICIDIAL now machine when it was was given production-level call volumes.

Matt,

VicidialNOW is only limited by the hardware being utilized. It is designed for single server setup. Depending on the hardware, it can accomodate up to 25 seats using a Core 2 Quad system with 2 gig of RAM without any issues at all. We have been using VicidialNOW in production with different clients with less than 30 seats and so far no issue at all. If they want to go on large scale production, we customize the system for a multi-server scenario.

VicidialNOW has remained faithfull to the scratch install document with minor modifications. It almost has all the features mentioned in the scratch install and a little bit more. Only difference is the platform of choice. We have had and we still have very good experience using the CentOS Linux distribution. I can attribute the problems some people have using this distribution with Vicidial to lack of knowledge in administering the CentOS system.

well .. i believe redhat systems & the like (centos/fedora) are great work, out of the box you find that everything has been setup & configured for you and yet better SECURED for you --just start the service if you wish to use--
& thru the years I have run many such systems & never was disapointed.

gurus's distributions lile slackware & debian are there ... why use them ?
you answer this question & shall know : what could be better than what the gurus themselves use ?

only a personal opinion I think debian runs faster than centos at kernel compile ... cpu load didn't go over 1.3 & finish time was earlier ... but it might be just my case.

perhaps someone else can tell us his own story.

One of the biggest problems with CentOS default kernels is Process preemption:

Preemption Model (Voluntary Kernel Preemption (Desktop))

This allows Linux to set the process priority of processes(for example perl scripts) to a lower priority than Asterisk. What this can do on an above-average loaded system is cause AGI scripts to not run when they are supposed to causing all sorts of problems with VICIDIAL.

I have personally traced this to be the problem on three systems and after recompiling the kernel with the Preemption model set to "Server" the problems went away.

That is only one of the issues I have run into on default CentOS, but it is one of the bad ones.

This is an excerpt from this link: http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/FAQ_85_5865.shtm

Kernel preemption is a feature of kernel version 2.6.x. This is included in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4. Kernel preemption helps with system responsiveness for soft realtime embedded applications and makes little to no difference for desktop usage. This is disabled by default because some non re-entrant modules cause instability in the operating system. As such, mission critical servers may not find kernel preemption too viable.

CentOS Is based from RedHat and claims 99% binary compatibility. However, digging further, it seems that they don't have kernel preemption set to "Server" unlike RedHat.

Thanks for pointing this out Matt. We'll have the next VicidialNOW release set to 250hz for Server preemption. Hopefully this takes out some of the problems encountered with high volume systems.

Wouldn't you want the preemption set to SERVER, AND the kernel timer set for 1000Hz if you do not have any hardware zaptel timers installed on the machine so you have a reliable meetme timer source too?

Yep! Should be 1000hz not 250hz. By default CentOS has timer set to 1000hz. However, preemption is set to desktop even though it's a server distro.
