Impact of multicores and 64 bits

Postby richo2007 » Thu May 22, 2008 5:22 pm

Im planing to install some additional vicidial servers. I'm running the web server and DB in different boxes.

I'm trying to choose between some dual core and some cuad core servers.

Nevertheless reading the VICI:faq i found the following sentence:

"it doesn't make sense to buy a multi-core or hyperthreaded system that will only slow you down"

Is that really the case? Given the current tendency to build processors with more and more cores, are we not going to be able to leverage on that?

What is the extra gain of running vicidial on a 64 bits platform?

Thx

NO! Sorry to yell there, but that is not true, I just altered that page in fact to remove that statement.

Multi-core CPUs are a great thing for Asterisk and VICIDIAL and will dramatically reduce your load.

Thanks for confirming what I thought.

So that means that the number of Agents System servers, as defined in http://www.callcentersg.com/design.php will change also depending on the kind of cpu/cores of the server.

What is the processor size/kind assumed in that design tool?

Thx

That was a dated statement from john hood when vicidial was still in its infancy.

There are big gains on using 64bit and multi cores servers.

Here's a secret of mine. It's better to waste server hardware resources than having a high loaded system having problems :)

I just wish I can make a client of mine to tell me to install 10 seats per core2quad servers lol. I can go play crysis everyday and not worry about vicidial ever having errors lol.

Dual Core with VICI = Great
Quad Core with VICI = Better

I have many call centers on both architectures, and they run flawless.

I have no idea what was used as a base for the design tool, I didn't make it, but it does seem a bit dated.

Also, the number of agents depends on more than just the lines to agent ration, Recording, the inbound/outound call mix and the kind of trunks used are also very important in figuring out a machine's functional capacity. in some cases you could safely fit 80 agents on a single server, and in others you may only want 20.
