Hi Guys,

I am new at this. Please excuse my lack of knowledge...if we don't install X Windows(GNOME or KDE) how do we get Desktop? Is there a way to copy and paste the commands listed in Scratch Install in that case? If yes, how?

Otherwise, do we first install X Windows and then remove it after the entire installation of Scratch Install.

I am using Fedora Core 4 on one machine and Slackware 10.2 on another...want to see which one is more user freindly for us. Will roll out the one that is more reliable.

I would strongly suggest that you consider hiring a consulting company to help with your installation. There are many listed on the Wiki here:

If you're connecting through a windows box you'll need putty, an ssh client. You don't want X windows chewing up your resources. Once connected you'll be able to copy and paste.

Matt - This is an inhouse project with no allocation for consultants. Therefore, we will have to do with whatever resources we can come up with. We have a RHCE coming on board in a few days...just want to get things going.

So far we have been doing installation on the same machine locally. Do we need to log in using a different machine using PUTTY or SSH?

Can we remove X Windows after the installation is complete?

It is easiest to use PuTTY or slogin from a remote machine to install Asterisk on Linux. That is how I do all installations.

Completely removing Xwindows after installation is very difficult and time consuming so it is not recommended.

Following the SCRATH_INSTALL will take you through installing Linux with no GUI. After Linux is installed and configured you can hook the server up somewhere remote if you need to since everything else for Asterisk/VICIDIAL can be done through an ssh terminal.

If no one logs into X/Gnome locally on the server and it sits at the login screen, does it *really* drain that much resources ? (no screensaver, just DPMS)

That depends on your distro and what you have installed. On several platforms the daemons for X run no matter what. On others, nothing is launched til you type "startx".

you can have your linux boot to run level 3. that's the way it used to be by defalt. unbuntu has a sever edition that install a LAMP stack. if course things are slightly different than the scratch install docs. good luck whatever you choose as your distro.

What are the drawbacks of installing X Windows (GNOME or KDE) prior to installing and Asterisk and Vici Dial. Would Asterisk and ViciDial not work if we install X Windows (GNOME or KDE).

Asterisk would work with Gnome/KDE installed, the issue is with audio quality and delay, especially with any VOIP channels.

Thanks Matt. Apart from Audio quality and latency thru VOIP are there anyother issues that we may run into if we have Gnome/KDE installed. Would there be any comaptability issues with Vici Dial? We want to do some initial tests and see how the whole thing works before rolling it out.

It should technically function just fine for testing. But I would not recommend it for a production machine. It's not VICIDIAL that has the problem it's Asterisk.
