How'd you guess? :)

Just so you know, I used to exclusively use RedHat years ago, then they started to have issues with perl and kernel modules and it just got worse until I finally tried Slackware and had much more stability and a slight performance gain over RedHat. Since then we've standardized on OpenSuSE and Ubuntu which we have had very good results with, including not having as messed-up of a stock kernel as compared to CentOS.

In the end, we have fixed dozens of stock CentOS ViciDial systems by wiping out CentOS and installing just about anything else on them. Of course the ViciDialNOW project uses CentOS as a base, but not the stock kernel.

Yep. CentOS has their flaws so as other distributions. I still like it though. It's hard to wean away from it. Just had to fill-up some of their failings for ViciDial to run properly. :) That doesn't mean that I don't like the Buntus. They're also good. Though I still prefer CentOS for my servers.

Doesn't make much sense though. Why not just decide on the same distro? At first glance it is now almost as if Vicibox and Vicidialnow is in competition. No wonder the newbies are confused! :D

That's the beauty of open source. There are more choices or options. You don't need to get stuck with one. Why are there lots of linux distributions? :D

I don't see it really as competition. It's more of a choice for the users. If they prefer RPM or RedHat/CentOS based system, VicidialNOW is the choice. If they like DEB or Ubuntu based, Vicibox it is.

It's actually essential. VicidialNOW saves a lot of people who have some sort of requirement for CentOS and makes it possible for them to use the Vicidial system. In some cases it's a preference, but in others it's a requirement (if CentOS were not possible, their project would not launch for whatever reason).

So VicidialNOW is an essential tool to keep Vicidial available for everyone serious about using it. The work put in to keep it up to date (and I speak mostly of the upgrade to 1.2 for Vicidial 2.0.5) is awesome. I have clients that would simply have purchased software on RedHat had they not been able to use CentOS. And it would not have been Vicidial. But CentOS (free and very familiar for those clients) and Vicidial (similar cost, if I remember correctly) in a package easily installed via .iso ... yep, that bring more people to the party. The more the merrier.

However, I have a brilliant technician who was weaned on Redhat (oh, the stories! LOL) and loves CentOS, but even he only uses VicidialNOW when required by the client. Otherwise (for dialers) he stays completely within Ubuntu or Gentoo.

I forgot to post this:

Note: The CentOS Development team had a normal meeting today and Lance Davis was in attendance. In the meeting a majority of issues were resolved right away and a working agreement was reached with deadlines for any unresolved issues. There should be no impact to any CentOS users moving forward.
