New Idea to Support VICIDIALNOW Community

Postby webgurru » Wed Aug 19, 2009 5:51 am

Hi All,

Being a part of this community is one of the best thing, and help the community back is one of the great thing you can ever do. I am part of this community for a while now and have learnt lot of things within short period. I am not VICIDIAL expert but I have a firm grip to do initial setup with voip/sip. I am still learning other part of it and may be good in it after some time. I am really proud of all the admins, moderator and other active members of the forum. Admins have so many work to do for the betterment of this project, keeping in view this, it is responsibility of new members to help this forum at the level they can. It's not a good idea to get education from here and not return it.

From today I want to give a new idea for community support. If admins like this we can carry on with it. My idea is after having a good knowledge of any part of vicidial/vicidialnow, it's responsibility of that member to return what he has learnt to at least 15 members. This work can be done in the way convenient for the member, if you can remotely log on and fix it that would be brilliant. If you can't do this, quick reply in the forum till problem is sorted will be other choice.

To start this new idea. I personally present myself available for next 15 days. I'll be available every day for 2 hours to fix problem by remotely logging into the system. During this period of time I'll only fix the initial configuration problem using voip/sip for VICIDIALNOW latest version. I'll take system from a fresh install and configure it to a full working manual dial system. I'll try to fix two system daily and this work will be done on first come first serve bases. In this way at the end of 15 days I have fixed 30 new members.

Only one requirement to use this service will be the member has to support the 30 other new members. In this way soon we will be taking all burden off the admins and they can focus to develop newer version at much faster rate.

To start this, I'll be available to new install problem members from 20th August 2009 between 10:00AM-12:00PM GMT (Mon-Fri), 05:00PM-07:00PM GMT (Sat-Sun)

To use this service there are few things should be done on the members end.

1) Fresh install of VICIDIALNOW latest version
2) System should be on network
3) Remote access should be setup on one of the computer in the network
4) Any SSH client preferably PUTTY should be available on remote system
5) All information regarding dial plan and sip provider should be ready
6) Admin iformation about router in case of port forwarding

Once this information is ready member should PM me and I'll reply with the date and time to be with him.

Note to admins: If any of the admins think some better idea to do this I am ready to do. If you think it's not a good idea and should not be done please delete this post and ignore my mistake.

Best regards,
webgurru

Uhm this might be a good idea if we are using a hobby system.

But no I dont think this is a good idea. You are going to open a lots of cans of worms.

For example are you really that confident in giving someone access to your internal network? Much less on a predictive dialer server that your gonna use for your operation? How about the voip details?

This is a very insecure thing to do and quite irresponsible.

Also, what do the user will gain if you fixed their system than you guiding them here? Plus remember a lot will come to you to fix their client's system :P . They earn some money while you do what they are supposed to be doing. As you can see some people have multiple accounts and will continue posting under different accounts just to get support for their clients problems.

The best way to help others is to guide them here as the solutions will be seen by other people who will encounter it in the future.

*note Im a little bit biased though as I earn my living doing consulting things :) so take my word with a grain of salt.

Hi Op3r

For example are you really that confident in giving someone access to your internal network? Much less on a predictive dialer server that your gonna use for your operation? How about the voip details?
This is a very insecure thing to do and quite irresponsible.

For above part, as I told it should be a fresh install and it can be on any IP scheme and passwords which can be changed afterwards. If member won't trust Voip details can be left blank and be filled by member afterwards. So this not a risky in any way.

All this thing willl go on trust and I hope members will respect it.

The best way to help others is to guide them here as the solutions will be seen by other people who will encounter it in the future.

We all are doing and have the same problems for beginers. All solution are in the forum still newbies can't find it. Idea is to build thier confidence and let them to help for others

No body can snatch money which is yours. What Matt did? he developed it and let it for community. He can keep this for his own and sell it at good price, but he did for community, we can't be Matt but we can try to do something.

I agree with this. This will foster an atmosphere of dependency. The answers are out there. One just need to search for it. We're not here to increase our numbers nor look for more members. If the "newbies" can't find the answers available on the forum, then they should search some more. It they still can't find it (assuming it's available) then they don't deserve our help.

@scsaus

Your notion of open source software is misconceived. Here's a snippet of the AGPL/GPL (Affero General Public License):

When we speak of free software, we are referring to freedom, not price. Our General Public Licenses are designed to make sure that you have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (and charge for them if you wish), that you receive source code or can get it if you want it, that you can change the software or use pieces of it in new free programs, and that you know you can do these things.

To protect your rights, we need to prevent others from denying you these rights or asking you to surrender the rights. Therefore, you have certain responsibilities if you distribute copies of the software, or if you modify it: responsibilities to respect the freedom of others.

For example, if you distribute copies of such a program, whether gratis or for a fee, you must pass on to the recipients the same freedoms that you received. You must make sure that they, too, receive or can get the source code. And you must show them these terms so they know their rights.

Here's the link for the complete GPL/AGPL

http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/agpl.html

I hope that gives you and the community a better understanding of what open source software is all about.
