does it work if you use a real drive instead of a virtual one?

hm. have you tried deleting the "logical" volume independently of the vicidial install?

what kind of drive is it that it didn't come up as hda or sda?

Interesting. Wonder what the deal was with the "logical" volume on that drive. CentOS to the rescue! :)

I would dd the drive out so that it appears blank. The new vicibox installer can be a little sensitive to hard-drive configurations, specially when it runs into LVM and grub2 stuff. If dd isn't your thing, there are a lot of general system cd's that you can use to wipe the drives clean if you want. Trinity Rescue CD is the one that comes to mind for me. Knoppix and all sorts of others exist too.

so far on our use since 3.0, the built-in has been able to delete anything we asked it to, and re-create. we have not recently tried any special RAID cards, though.

I've ran into something similar after trying to repurpose our test box that had Ubuntu 10.10 installed on it. Evidently grub2 does some rather fun things with the drive that disturb the opensuse install. I've also seen it happen on a drives that were previously in a bios/fake raid (rock-raid for example). The drives had to be wiped to get them to work.
