Any special networking concerns?

Postby B.lee2 » Tue Jan 17, 2012 12:57 pm

I'm a complete newb in networking. I'm trying to setup a vicibox server with 3 workstations right now.

What special considerations should I take into account for networking? I can't think of anything other then just a normal setup right now.

As part of the office lease, internet is included, and the guy he tells me that he has a industrial-grade router.

Should I get a vlan? Should I get a switch? The internet line is actually pretty generous, it is shared but I don't expect that it will become over-saturated.

Thanks in advance. Know the questions are not too specific, but I really don't even know where to start.

Do you have an external IP address? (or two preferably, one for the Vicidial system directly and one for YOUR router directly)

Beware "Private IP addresses" (192.168.X.X & 10.X.X.X) which require NAT and can cause delays even with Cool Special routers. Also beware port closures (ie: if he won't pass port 5060, you won't be able to receive a call from somecarriers or make calls to some carriers).

Best scenario: Two IPs, one to Vicidial, one to Router. Vicidial has two Network cards, one for internal IP address to communicate with Agents locally and one to communicate with Carriers on the net. Use IPtables to completely lock down the external network card (noone should even see that your box exists except your carriers, unless your server reaches out to them first). Then the dialer's local IP can be on the same subnet as the local network for the agents with fast throughput.

Good luck. :)

Hi william,

No, I don't have a public IP. it's just a transfer from one vlan to another with static IP (I'm a student, while the whole enchillada with two network cards and public IP is definetely a long term project, I really want to keep costs down for at least the first month).

Thanks for the support, I really find open-source amazing : :)
