IS THIS HARDWARE COMPATIBLE WITH VICIBOX?

Postby franklinsj » Fri Nov 16, 2012 10:10 am

Good day,

We are interested in deploying vicibox in our call center, we already have some existing servers that we now that they work with vicidial but we are thinking about purchasing new server for the database server in the cluster. We are less than 150 people at this time but looking into grow to maybe 200 sits at some point, probably more than half of the call center would be just inbound. The 2 options that we are currently looking into are:

This option comes with AMD Opteron 16 cores processor

Item Description Qty
Server AS -1022G-URF 1
CPU Interlagos 16C 6272 2.1G 16M 6400MT 1
RAM 32GB (8x 4GB) 8
HDD SEAGATE 450G SAS2.0 15K.7 RPM 3.5" 2
Controller 1
DVD DVD 1
Cables 1
Ensamble 1

And then I have this other option in Intel Quadcore

Item Description Qty
Server SYS-7047R-3RF4+ 1
CPU Sandy Bridge 6C E5-2620 2.0G 15M 7.2GT/s QPI 2
RAM 16GB 4x 4GB 4
HDD SEAGATE 450G SAS2.0 15K.7 RPM 3.5" 4
Ensamble 1

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Franklin

I hate to tell you that there is no "prediction" possible of compatibility. The drivers may be compatible, or they may not. If the server has been on the market for over a year, the odds are pretty good. If it has been on the market for under six months, the odds are not so good.

The key component is the motherboard, as that is where the chips reside that must interact with the drivers in the OS to manage the system. But unless someone has specifically worked with that chipset, there is no way to predict it.

If it is compatible with the base OS (presently OpenSuSE 11.4 I believe), the odds are pretty good. But the only way to be sure is to actually install.

On the lighter side: If you are planning to use this machine as your DB server for a cluster: The operating system is neutral, it can be CentOS, Gentoo, OpenSuSE, Ubuntu, Debian ... anything that has a MySQL distribution for it because that's what the database server needs. The database server CAN be installed with Vicibox (and this is recommended), but it is not a requirement to do so (just makes it easier ... Kumba takes care of all the settings for you!).

Great information, thank you for your time. But still, do you think this hardware on both scenarios could be strong enough to handle such amount of work? I am particulary intrested in the one with amd opteron with 16 cores since the price is pretty much the same and the amount of cores is twice the amount on the other server.

Predictability of MySQL server Power is not something we do. There are too many variables for any scenario other than an apples to apples comparison. Without knowing your entire setup and comparing it to another similar situation/server, there would be far too much likelihood that I am merely "guessing". As such, I'm sure you could get others to "guess", but unless they have a 16 Core processor or 8 Core processor system that is otherwise identical (front side bus speed, memory speed and amount ... hard drive speed, etc), that Guess is simply something to make you feel good while making your purchase and has no bearing on reality.

From what I understand Kumba has handled a lot of 150+ installations, but Kumbas time is not ordinarily free any more than mine is. And the question/answer session required to get all the information to make the guess is rather time-consuming.
