Postby rubai » Mon Dec 24, 2012 2:53 am

I want to work with asterisk, vicidial, elastix. Which linux distribution is best for all of these?

It really depends on what you're looking to do... I suppose you would want to use your laptop as a 'desktop user' (meaning that you need a gnome or kde interface for your every-day stuff). I would install virtualbox and run each 'program' in separate virtual machines as one installation will f*ck up the other (pardon my french). As for distribution..., you mention you want asterisk, elastix and vici. The latter two already have ISOs that from which you can install the OS included there (Centos for Elastix, OpenSuse for Vici). As for Asterisk, if you want **plain** asterisk, maybe you can find better documentation on installing it on a RedHat based distribution (either RedHat or Centos), but any other is just as good. Maybe ubuntu could be a good option as you can install from repos. If you want to get a bit more 'picky' on what and where you install, you could set it up on a Slackware but you'll have to compile some stuff yourself, but I tell ya' once you install in Slack...., it'll run smooooooooootthhhh. Regarding Ubuntu..., it does not really matter if you want to use Ubuntu Server or Ubuntu Desktop. The difference between the two is that on Desktop you have a graphic interface...

Hello, I am having a similar problem in trying to setup Vicibox on Virtualbox. I'm trying to do so on Opensuse. Should I download the OS and Vicibox as separate machines? I initially downloaded Opensuse and then tried to download Vicibox on the same machine and now I can't get to a desktop of any sort and I keep getting routed to boot page up starting the machine. Also, I'm having problems with getting wanpipe-config to work properly.

Vicibox is a bootcd that will install an operating system and will later install Vici (after reboot following the directions found in the readme or install files). Ther is no GUI (Graphic Interface) to Vicibox and would be (in my opinion) a waste of PRECIOUS resources to install a GUI on the server.

Star off with a clean Virtualbox container (make a new box) with the Vicibox ISO loaded in the CD 'tray' and follow the onscreen instructions. Once in the command prompt type
Code: Select all
os-install

This will install OpenSuse by itself. Once the server reboots (I believe it will reboot itself) log in to the box and run
Code: Select all
vicibox-install

This will install Vici. After that go ahead and try again with wanpipe. Don't install another Suse or any other OS with Vici.

Thanks for the quick response. How do I access Vicidial after all that has been done? Don't I need a desktop with Opensuse in order to do so?

Sorry..., I do not understand your question. After you install the server you can access your server through a console (directly attached to the server) or via ssh from another station on the network. Vicibox 4.0 already installs openssh-server. Let me know if this answers your question.

My apologies as i'm not a programmer and I'm new to all of this. After I run everything and type 'reboot' for a clean install it seems as nothing happened and I'm taken to the boot screen all over again after re-starting the machine on Virtualbox. At this point I have run OS-installl and vicibox-install and I don't see how to log into the vicidial.

Try pointing a browser to your new server's IP address and see what happens.

I've tried that and nothing happens. Albeit I was on my primary OS when I did. I don't have a browser on my virtual machine.

Sorry for the multiple questions. I'm certain that the software has been loaded correctly on my cpu as when I log in to the server there are several green OK messages on the right hand side of the screen. I've installed the server via Virtualbox and I think the problem I'm having is related to the install on a virtual machine. Any help or advice given would be appreciated as I don't have $600 to $800 to pay for support right now.

Hi Thaylor

1. which virtual machine you are using ( vmware or sun virtual box)

2.while installing in a virtual you need to consider the below
make sure the network setting set as Bridged. for the particular host in the virtualbox.

3. you should give a proper ip,gateway, dns while installing the vicibox.

4. once you have installed vicibox, ping the ip from the another pc(windows or linux) in the same LAN.

5. once its pinging browse the ip in mozilla firefox like http://ipaddressofthevicivbox/vicidial/welcome.php.

Code: Select all
ip a sh
