LSI Megaraid not recognized

Vicibox 4.02 from .iso Supermicro 7046T-3R Motherboard X8DT3 Raid controller LSI SAS1068E

Hi. I just wanted to share part of the experience that I am having installing a vicidial cluster for the company i work for. On this particular server the vicibox installer did not recognize the hardware raid i created and was not seeing any hardrive units at all. The bios did not have any options to turn off the raid controller and make the SAS units recognizable.

Searching in google found some clues about it mostly in blogaristoo lqx net/index dot php/sassy-lip-from-the-lsi-1068e. I had to actually open the server and open jumper JPS1 (JPA1 on some other servers) which is between the sata and sas connectors, after this is done the installer will be able to recognize the hardrives but bios will not be able to boot from the hardrives even if you install the OS.

You need create a bootable DOS usb stick or floppy drive and paste some files within that drive that later you will use to reflash your bios. Those files in my case i got them from ftp supermicro com /driver/SAS/LSI/1064_1068/IT/Firmware/B3/LP-L8i/1.30.00/L8iLP_IT.zip just unzip the file within the bootable usb stick or floppy disc you created.

Once you have booted from the usb stick go to the installer folder, look for the DOS compatible installer and execute .bat file, then it will take a couple minutes to reflash your bios and you will be able to boot from SAS.

Later i just formatted the SAS drives and created software raid and installed the OS.

Hope this helps

We use SuperMicro servers exclusively in our hosted but none have the built-in RAID. Perhaps that is the difference. We use LSI MegaRaid cards or the SuperMicro version of the MegaRaid cards. They boot up fine with no issues.

We've had more issues with the 3.1/3.2 kernels and the platform hardware error detection then anything. This is a well documented kernel issue that was fixed after 3.2 though. Not really a SuperMicro thing.
