Is it possible to migrate Vicibox to SUSE (paid)?

Postby ccabrera » Mon Mar 11, 2013 4:59 pm

Hello,

I've just installed a new Vicidial system (SVN version) using the Vicibox 4.0.3 distribution. Because of a company restriction, they are asking me to migrate the OpenSUSE system Vicibox is currently running on to a SUSE (paid) version.

I'm guessing this is by all means possible, since one is the open source version of the other one.

Do any of you have any thoughts on the matter, like any restrictions I might have if I migrate the system? Any concerns about software versions?

Ordinarily that can be done with the Scratch Install instructions. We provide installation services, as do many others including (I assume), Kumba who built the Vicibox installer. I also know that Gardo does installations, but he tends to stick to CentOS, I believe.

We are in the midst of building an install .iso for Ubuntu, but have not looked at SuSE as yet. We have performed many installations on Ubuntu, Gentoo, CentOS and a couple others I forget right now. LOL

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I know I'd have to follow the scratch install instructions and under that assumption, any distro would work.

However, I've read many times the reasons behind moving to OpenSuSe (instead of using CentOS, for example), and using those arguments I'm looking for a reason which may turn the SuSe migration a "bad idea".

If everything should just work, then I can continue with the scratch install. I'm just trying to plan ahead any possible complications I might get into.

Everything should work as well on SuSE as it does on OpenSuSE. But ... try to stick to the same version level if possible. And watch your mysql version as well (apparently 5.1 is preferable to 5.5). If possible, install a reference machine on a virtual server so you can compare package versions of the various software ... and match all to the best of your ability to be as close as possible to the OpenSuSE install. It may not be a bad idea to discuss paying Kumba to produce a SuSE install package/.iso. If it can be done from the existing SuSE Studio image ... that could be very cool. :)
